Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide speaking practice in the context of reporting truth and lies
Procedure (29-45 minutes)
Teacher starts this stage by asking students to tell their partners about the last time they told a lie. They should also discuss the reason and say why they told that lie. Teacher monitors them when they are speaking and helps them with the words they may not know. The feedback is checked voluntarily.
Students will listen to a track concentrating on the lies they hear. When teacher stops the track, students should work in small groups and discuss the lies they heard about. When the time finishes, teacher conducts WC feedback.
Teacher gives the first HO to the students and asks them to fill in the blanks. The students are supposed to fill in the gaps with the correct forms of the verbs. When they finish, they will check their answers with their partner and then with the other members of her group. When the time of checking is over, students listen to the track again to check their answers. After that, teacher projects correct sentences on the board.
The teacher starts clarification through eliciting the meaning and the form by the help of the students. Teacher points to the sentences on the board which are from the previous exercise and asks CCQs for the sake of elicitation. When clarification finishes, Teacher puts students in pairs and asks them to write the direct form of the sentences (part A and C) and compare their answers with other groups. Correct answers are given to the students by the teacher.
Teacher provides instructions for the task before giving the second HO to the students. Students will do the task individually before checking their answers in pairs. Teacher projects the answer key on the board.
As the next exercise, students are going to fill in the blanks and produce the correct form of the sentences. After doing it in pairs, they check their answers in groups and see the answer key which is provided by the teacher.
Teacher puts the students into groups of three and gives them slips of paper and asks them to write a lie along with her/his name on each slip. They are supposed to fold the paper and put it in a box. When teacher collects all the lies, she has the box in front of every student, letting him/her to pick one up. When all of the students selected a lie, they should report it to the other members of the group. Teacher writes some of the reported lies on the board
The teacher writes any mistakes she could recognize from the previous task on the whiteboard and give instructions to the students and asks them to work together and correct the mistakes. After that, the teacher tries to review what the students learned during the session through CCQs.
