Reading lesson: A good impression

In the lesson students will practice receptive skill - reading. They will skim for gist and scan for specific information. Also, students will look at some vocabulary related to making a good impression.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about How to make a good impression in the context of Giving impressions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of impression words in the context of Giving impressions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask them if they remember what was the topic of the previous lesson, elicit the word impression. Ask them what is important for making a good impression.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Put one picture on the WB and who is this. Put them into small groups and put the rest of the pictures on the WB. Ask them to make a story according to these pictures about what happened to this man. Take FB.

While-Reading #1 (16-19 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading and infereing tasks

Give them the text and ask to skim it to find out what it is about. Put them in pairs to exchange their ideas. Take FB. Put them into 3 groups. Divide the WB in to 3 parts. Stick the definitions of the words to the board. Tell them one person from the team has to come to the WB, take one definition, go back to their partner and find the right word for this definition in the text. Do the same with all the words. Take FB.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

Ask them to work with their partners. Have them do exercise 2a. When they finish, tell them to look for the answer key under their desks. Take FB.

Post-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Divide them into two groups. Ask them to share their ideas about what makes a good impression on them. Monitor. Error correction.
