Phrasal Verbs
Upper-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will focus on using phrasal verbs and how they work in sentences, grammar, and everyday speech. Ss will be able to listen to phrasal verbs in speech and use them in their own words to describe actions regarding themselves or others.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Phrasal Verbs
  • To provide clarification of Phrasal Verbs in the context of Environment, Pollution, and Plastics

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide inference listening practice using a text about Pollution and Plastics in the context of Waste, plastic, and environmental care

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will look at a picture involving pollution and plastic. I will ask the students what items they had used that contained or were made from plastic.

Text Work/Gist (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Allow students to listen to the audio and answer questions about what the speaker has or hasn't done to help lower the usage of plastics.

Target Language (12-15 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Introduce Phrasal Verbs based on the audio and allow the students to make connections to those phrasal verbs they had listened to but didn't pay attention to in the gist activity to see if they can draw on the concept of the speaker and inferences for PV. Students will have work to complete on google forms/google slides in order to check understanding and work amongst themselves for small periods of allotted time.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will have questions and answers using the phrasal verbs in the lesson through a guided worksheet that they will answer and discuss amongst themselves.

Free Practice (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Allow students to have questions with PV and have PV for an answer that they will then come up with for a natural, free conversation.
