Lesson 2: Listening
Pre-intermediate level
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide listening practice for gist and specific info in the context of lying.
Subsidiary Aims
-
Better pronunciation of words Giraffe and Record
Procedure (41-51 minutes)
I'll start by warmly welcoming my class and expressing my gratitude to the students for being there. Then, I'll take some time to ask each student individually about lying and the ways to know someone is lying
Next, I'll transition to the vocabulary section, where I've selected the words "giraffe" and "record" as our focus. I'll begin by asking the students if anyone can explain the meaning of each word. After hearing their definitions, I'll provide the accurate definition, including the word type and proper pronunciation. After that, I'll ask all of the students (as long as there are no more than 5 students) to repeat the pronunciation as I demonstrated since it is only 2 vocabulary words.
I will then play the first audio that is just simply an introduction to the full audio and will proceed to ask the students some prediction questions and converse with them a little bit about their replies
I will ask them what they know about Usain Bolt and have small chit chat with 2, maybe 3 students about who he is. I will then play the second audio which is not just an introduction, but the full interview. I know we had said that we should post the questions beforehand, but since these are predictions and not questions, I will not be showing them until after. Once we have heard the audio once or twice depending on if the students request to hear it a second time, I will send them a google form with only 1 question which will be a checkbox question on the 7 things said about Usain Bolt (I know on the guide is says to do a doc instead, but I feel a Form is much easier), they should answer it in 1-2 minutes. I will then seperate them into Breakout Rooms and ask them to see if they have the same answer. If they do have the same answer, I will ask them to discuss the reason why they believe they are correct. If they have different answers I will ask them to give their reasoning to the other person as to why they believe they are correct. I will give them 4 minutes for this. Finalizing this I will have a conversation with one member of each breakout room about the discussion they had and how they resolved it. Once the students have answered, I will play the final audio for them to check their answers and we will discuss it for a bit
I will then ask students to discuss the questions that I will post about lying and send them to breakout rooms to discuss the questions. Hopefully they can talk 4 minutes, but depending on the time I may cut it a bit shorter just so I can thank them for having paid attention to my class and pass it on to the next teacher
