Main Aims

To provide listening practice of phrases to negotiate in the context of sharing a flat.
Subsidiary Aims

To provide specific information and gist listening practice using a text about negotiating in the context of chores in a flat.

To provide fluency speaking practice in a negotiation in the context of sharing a flat.
Procedure (25-45 minutes)
* In pairs answer these questions: 1. "Do you live in a house or in a flat?" 2. "Who do you live with?" 3."Do you have any children?" 4."Where do your children live?" * Ask the students to report the information gotten from their partners. * Show pictures of different chores at home, and ask to random students (beginning with the strongest ones): Who does this in your house? * Paste the pictures on the board and ask: "What is the topic of today's lesson?" Students will say "chores" * Ask students: Imagine you are living with a roommate/flatmate, who would do these chores?
* Tell students to take a look at the picture with the three men. * Ask the students: What do you think the connection between them is? * Ask them: Are these Obama, Mustafa, Metin? Students will say "No" * Ask them to listen to a conversation and identify their names. (Check) * Ask students to answer questions 3.b 1-3 from the book in groups. * Play the recording again ans ask them to check.
* Ask students : focus on the chart and discuss in pairs, "what are the flatmates talking about in these sentences?" - Give examples: "Are they talking about doing the laundry? the grocery shopping?" * Play the recording again, and have the students check.
* Write on the board - How about if... - Or we could just - Let's say ..... if - But if I ... That way... - That would mean.. * Ask them: What are they doing here? Are they giving explanations, asking for information? Giving an invitation? * Ask them: connect these expressions to C 1-3
* ask them to do exercise 5 *ask them to check in pairs. * Have some students read the sentences with the correct answers.
* Sit the students in groups of three (or four). Write situations on the board and ask them to imagine they live together and they have to negotiate to find solutions.
