Description

Listening lesson about celebrities with difficulties in their lives.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about hardships and challenges faced by some celebrities in the context of their lives before being famous

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of general lexis in the context of celebrities' lives

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask the students if they're interested in celebrities and to name two celebrities they know.

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Present four words that will come up in the text that are important for the students' understanding of the text. Check if they know the vocabulary already and provide an example phrase in which each word can appear. Check each word's pronunciation and form.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Show the students the people to whom the text refers and the problem's they have faced. Give them two minutes to make predictions about which problems apply to each person. Give them three minutes to read the text. Ask if they predicted correctly and show them the answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (15-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Show the students questions that require reading the text in more detail to answer. Give them four minutes to read the text and take note of their answers. After reading, send them to breakout rooms for five minutes to discuss their answers in pairs. Call them back to the main meeting and go over each question's answer.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Present two questions for discussion and send students to breakout rooms again for five minutes to talk to each other. Monitor groups and take note of errors in their speech. Call students back to the main meeting for feedback and to point out some of the errors they made, with their respective corrections.
