Description

In this lesson, Ss learn more about comparing by using quantifiers and adverbs, as well as to practice pronunciation by stressing a word in order to compare or contrast it with something else.

Materials

  • To review and practice Comparing by using quantifiers and adverbs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking by focusing on stressing a word in order to compare or contrast it with something else.

Procedure

Highlighting and Clarification (16-18 minutes) • To introduce Comparatives through an exercise based on the TL from the previous lesson

To focus the students on the TL in Grammar ex.1. Ask students to focus on the exercise individually. After a couple of minutes, ask them to check in pairs. After taking feedback, whole class shall listen once again and check the answers. The students check 1b in the same pairs. Feedback. Focus will be on MFP. The students will be introduced with the meaning and purpose of using adverbs (far, slightly, marginally) and quantifiers (much, a lot, a little, a bit) in modifying comparative form, as well as the use of adverbs with comparative expression "as ... as" in modifying the meaning. Grammar Reference and Practice p139 will be used for this part. Sts will try to resolve this exercise individually. After monitoring, they will be asked to check in small groups. General FB and some CCQ.

Warmer/Exposure (3-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through eliciting the main topic and connecting it to the previous listening

To check the names and introduce myself again. To establish the context by eliciting the topic. To mention that the topic will be related to the listening exercise from the previous lesson.

Contrastive stress (9-10 minutes) • To practice stress in the context of comparing.

Introduce the importance of stress for comparing. Explain that adverbs and quantifiers are usually stressed in comparative sentences. Use Pronunciation example ex 2 in its original form. Ss predict where stress is going to be before listening. GW and then W/C FB. Playing the recording to check. Practice saying the sentences.

Speaking (12-14 minutes) • To practice comparison based on the previous exercises

Ex 3 - Students write a paragraph (5-6 sentences), based on highlighted expressions from 1a. Ss will have enough time to prepare the ideas individually. They will be monitored and helped where needed. Ss will be divided in groups to discuss their ideas and ask each others if they want to find out more. Ex 4a - W/C feedback.on the Ex3 Ex 4b - Who would they like to meet? Monitoring and help where needed. General feedback.
