Lesson 1: Reading
Pre-intermediate level

Materials

Abc PowerPoint Presentation

Main Aims

  • To provide reading practice for gist in the context of life in the 1950s juxtaposed to life today

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed comprehension of the text 1950s and today

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will begin by giving a warm welcome to my class and thanking the students for attending. I will then proceed to shortly introduce myself and ask each student personally about their weekend, taking interest in what so as to build rapport with the students

Pre-Reading (12-14 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will then ask the students in what ways they believed that daily life is different today from what it was in the 1950s. I will expect some people to answer, but if no one decides to take a step forward I will ask them kindly by their name if they would like to share their thoughts. Hopefully this will encourage others to participate as well, but if it does not I will call on one more person to give me their thoughts on the differences between life today and in the 1950s. Once the students have shared their thoughts I will move on to the vocabulary, where I have chosen to focus on the words overweight, housewife and diet. I will ask the students if one of them knows the meaning of each word individually. Once the students have given their definition, I will give them the correct definition, along with the type of word it is and how to pronounce the word. I will then ask one or two students per word to try and pronounce the words as I have.

While-Reading #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with a general idea of the text

I will ask students to give me some predictions as to what the text might say about some questions I have written down on the slide. Once I have the opinion of a few students I will say who is right and who is wrong but without spoiling the reading but instead, giving them the answer so they are curious to see why they got it right or why they got it wrong.I will then give the students three minutes to do an initial reading so they get an idea of the text. Once the time is up I will ask them the prediction questions again to see if they know after reading why I had told them whether their prediction was right or wrong.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with a detailed comprehension of the text

I will ask the students to read the text again, this time more carefully, giving them 5 minutes to do so, in the hopes that they will read more carefully and perhaps even try to read the text twice. Once the time is up, I will upload the google forms link to the general chat. I will give them 3 minutes to answer the 9 questions on the Google Forms. When I see that I have responses from every student, I will send them into breakout rooms to discuss their answers, giving them another 3 minutes to check their respective answers. After I end the breakout rooms I will bring them back to the main room and show them the slide on my PowerPoint and inquire as to how they had done on the Form.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

To finalize I will switch over to my final slide where I have a few questions for them to give their opinion on related to the text. I will discuss these opinions with them hoping to have a good 5-7 minute conversation. After I have finished the conversation I will give them some feedback and say goodbye by thanking them for their time.
