Description

In this lesson, students will be learn how to change direct speech to ''reported (indirect) speech'' in the context of telling stories through PPP.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of reported(indirect) speech in the context of stories

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of reporting a story

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage I will tell my students about someone who was interviewing me and I will tell what that person told me.

Exposure (3-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask students interview each other about various topics(favorite movie..). After the interviews students report their findings to the class. they have to write 3 sentence about their partner. they will have 3 minutes to work in pairs.

Highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write some sentences on the board to draw their attention to the TL. ''Direct speech (He said ; I like you) ''Indirect speech (He said that he liked me) ''THAT is optional'' We change : 1) Pronouns 2)Verb tense when do we use tell? we use tell with an object or pronoun / he told me that he liked me. when do we use say? will use say without an object or pronoun / he said that he liked me.

Clarification (7-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify the meaning by writing the reported sentences on the board and asking them some CCQs; 1)If the direct speech is in the present tense, what tense do we use in reported speech? Answer: Past tense 2)If the speaker says, "I am going to the store," and the speaker is Mahdieh, what pronoun do we use in reported speech? Mahdieh said that she was going to the store. Answer: She. 3)What verb do we often use to introduce reported speech? Answer: Say or tell After that i will elicit the structure for the students to clarify how to form the sentences I want them to read and try to report sentences in class. ""IN THE BOOK"" -Simple present to simple past I can help you - He said that he could help me. -Present continuous to past continuous I'm driving - She said she was driving -Will to would I will call you - He told me that he would call me -Simple past to Past perfect I met a girl at the party - John said that he had met a girl at a party. -Present perfect to past perfect I've broken my arm - Sara said she had broken her arm.

Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

the students are going to do the exercise ''A'' on page ''149'' in the grammar bank in 3 minutes individually then they will have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs and the answers will be check with whole class.

Free Practice (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In this stage I will say a sentence to a student and she/he should report my sentence to their partner... "chain speaking" -I have finished my homework..
