-
To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about famous people's lives.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation and argumentation about close and open ended questions.
Procedure (41-53 minutes)
Show the students a picture of a celebrity (e.g. Hugh Jackman) and ask if they know who he is, something he's participated in and any details about his life. Then, ask them the names of 2-3 celebrities they know, and if they know something about their lives.
Before playing the audio, show the students the pictures of Sylvester Stallone and Rivaldo and ask them to read the information on the picture. Ask them if they know about those people and about their lives before starting their careers. Let the students know that we will listen to an audio about their lives and go over some of the words that appear in it.
Ask the students to listen attentively and take note of information that they didn't know before, as well as unknown vocabulary. Listen to the audio in two parts and ask them separately about Rivaldo's and Sylvester Stallone's stories, checking what they remember about their lives.
Show the students the questions about the audio that they will have to answer and give them a minute to read all of them. Once they have read the questions, play the audio without pause, and play it a second time if required. Send the students the link to the Google Forms form with the questions to answer individually, with a time limit of five minutes. After the time is up, make the students discuss their answers among themselves, taking note of errors in their speech. Finally, go over each question and ask why they answered as they did, commenting on some of their errors and how to correct them.
Ask the students whose life they consider to be harder and why. Ask them if they know of another famous person who had a difficult life. Provide feedback and error correction.
