Materials
Main Aims
-
Receptive skills - to provide gist, scan and detailed reading using three different texts about rice in the context of its importance as food and other uses.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To expand vocabulary through a post- reading task.
Procedure (37-52 minutes)
To greet the students and start asking a few questions about what type of food they have for lunch to then further link to the theme of their reading.
I'll stick on the WB several visuals of rice dishes as well as a few surprising products that are also made from rice, such as sake, wine, bread, cosmetics, sweets to elicit the word rice before the actual reading.
Whole class reading. The text has three paragraphs: the first is on the importance of rice as food for the world population, the second focuses on the reasons why popular is such a popular food and the third is about several world problems, both political and environmental, that put rice production in danger. I will ask them first to read briefly then to read for specific information.
I'll ask the students to discuss in six groups of 3 the main message of each of the three paragraphs on Rice, offering the headings to match the paragraphs. Then ask the WC the right matches
I'll divide the class into two big groups and distribute 2 HO containing 3 questions each. Then pair them so they are expected to discuss and answer more detailed questions, searching for specific information in the three paragraphs on Rice. Check answers with the whole class.
Ask the whole class what words they could not remember or any words new to them. Write them on WB and elicit meaning.
