Description

In this lesson, students will speak for fluency in the context of planning a trip. The lesson starts with a research about popular tourist destinations and which one of them the students prefer to go to. This is followed by preparing for a trip with a group with lots of activities. Then students tell each other about their plans and the class decides which one is the most fun and active.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

*T holds a discussion with the Ss about the following questions: -Do you enjoy travelling? -What do you like about travelling -Do you prefer to travel to the same place if you like it or you like changing the places you travel to?

Preparation and useful language (10-15 minutes) • To prepare their ideas for the speaking task using the useful language

*The T shows the Ss pictures of popular tourist destinations and sets instructions: -T says you have 3 pictures about popular tourist destinations. Look at them and answer the following questions in pairs: -What types of places or events are they? -Why do people go to these places? -Think of three more big events that people travel to. You have 5 minutes. *Then, T asks ICQs: -How many questions do you have? 3 -How much time do you have? 5 minutes *The T draws the Ss’ attention to the useful language box (Research section) *The T tells the Ss that they can use their phones to research facts. *Meanwhile, T monitors *T discusses some answers with the Ss *Then, T sets instructions for the following questions: -Which place of three pictures would you like to go to and why ? -What activities would you like to do there? -(Try agree on one place by convincing your partner with your reasons.) -You have 5 minutes *T asks ICQs: -How many questions you need to answer? 2 -Will you agree on one destination? yes How much time do you have? 5 minutes *The T gives the Ss 2 minutes to think individually first about the answers. *The Ss do the task. Meanwhile, the T monitors *T listens to some answers from the Ss *T sets instructions for the 3rd preparations task: -You are going on a trip for 3 days. -Based on the destination you decided to go to in the previous task, decide what you want to do in each day. -Make sure you include activities for all the different tastes and interests of your group. -Here are some points you can talk about (Food, activities, places to visit, the place you will stay at (ex: a hotel) -Make a table like the one below and take notes. You have (7 minutes) *Then, T asks ICQs: -How many days are you going to plan the trip for? 3 days -Will you make a complete program for each day? yes -How much time do you have? 7 minutes *Ss speak and T monitors. *Then T gives them 3 minutes to choose a representative of their group and prepare what he is going to say to the other groups.

Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To practice speaking for fluency

*T sets instructions for the speaking task (present): -T asks each group to present their travel plan to the class. -T asks the rest of the Ss to take notes during each presentation to help them ask questions when the presentation is over. -Each group has 3 minutes. -After all groups present, T ask Ss saying which trip sounds the most relaxing, active, and fun? Why *T asks ICQs: -How much time do we have for each group to present? 3 minutes -Will you listen carefully to decide at the end which travel plan is the best one? yes *While the Ss are presenting, T takes notes.

Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language
