Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice using both gerunds and infinitives in the context of quotes from celebrities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice for using both gerunds and infinitives to increase Ss fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show slide 1 with quotes from celebrities. Have them discuss what they knew about those celebrities, and which quote they liked the most.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Gist Show slide1. Have them read the slides and express their opinion of the meaning of target language.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will show slides 2 and 3 to draw attention to the target language and let them discover the patterns with gerunds and infinitives.

Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

At this stage, I will show slides 4 & 5 and demonstrate the pronunciation and where to stress words. We will also discuss the meaning of the target language and forms. I will ask CCQ's. Then we will proceed to slides 6-8 for them to practice identifying gerunds, nouns, and infinitives. I will ask more CCQ's.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In this controlled practice, they will have 9 fill-in-the-blank questions to complete, on slides 10 and 11. They are to answer the questions individually and then with each other before they justify their answers to the group. I will be asking more CCQ's.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I will show them slides 12 and 13. They have a semi-controlled practice to complete. In this practice, they will rephrase sentences into questions. They will do this individually.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

At this stage, the students will give each other feedback in rephrasing sentences from slides 12 & 13. I will do more CCQ's and follow up on any corrections that need to be made.
