In this lesson, learners will explore Mongolia through a reading activity, practicing gist and detailed comprehension. They’ll start with a lead-in, learn key vocabulary, read the text twice, and then discuss their responses in small groups. The lesson ends with feedback and error correction

Main Aims

  • To provide reading practice for gist and specific information in the context of Mongolia

Subsidiary Aims

  • • To provide fluency speaking practice in conversation in the context about Mongolia and the countries students are from.
  • To provide clarification of lifestyle and culture in the context of ways of life, sport and traditions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher asks learners to discuss in pairs or small groups: “What do you know about Mongolia?”

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher pre-teaches the following vocabulary words: nomadic, lumps of fat, wrestling, and fermented (elicits meaning, teaches form & pronunciation)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Teacher instructs learners to read the text to get the general idea and answer the following question: What does the writer think are the hardest things to deal with in Mongolia?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Teacher asks learners to read the text again to answer specific questions: a. the way of life outside the cities b. seasonal changes in the diet c. why fat is important in the diet d. the Naadam e. horse races t. Airag Learners complete Google Forms and compare their answers in pairs.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher asks learners to discuss respond to the contents of the text answering these questions in pairs: 1. In what ways is Mongolia different from your country? 2. What festivals do you have in your country? What happens at these festivals? 3 .Think of other countries with very different cultures from yours. Which would you most like to visit and why? Teacher conduct feedback on the task and Delayed Error Correction (DEC)
