New Year's Resolutions- Verb collocations lesson

Description

In this lesson ss will learn about some verb collocations in the context of New Year's resolutions through productive speaking activities. Teacher will do a short lead in to elicit the context and then the lesson will be followed by a pre-teaching some verb-noun collocations by MFP. Later, in the lesson, students will practice the TL through controlled- matching activity, semi-controlled;open ended dialogue and freer speaking tasks; comparison and priority ranking activities.

Procedure

warmer/Lead in (1-5 minutes) • To set the lesson context and get the attention of the students

T begins the lesson by sticking a 2015 calendar on the board to create a context about 'New Year's Eve Party'. Then Teacher asks about the 31st of December; What do people do on that date? What do people talk at the New Year's Eve party? and elicits 'New Year Plans'. Teacher gives the synonyms of New Year plans as' New year's resolutions'. Lead in finishes.

(Getting ready for speaking) (5-15 minutes) • Pre-teaching Vocabulary

T teacher refers back to herself through the context by saying that she is going to talk about her own new year plans and starts eliciting the target vocabulary by giving examples from her own life. Teacher will follow MFP method. T will do pronunciation drills and will show main stress of the target vocabulary. Teacher completes this stage

Controlled practice (1-5 minutes) • To provide students understand the correct form and meaning and get them to discuss in pairs.

T puts the sudents into pairs using their names. T gives instructions for the matching activity. T sets the time for 2 min. T ask them to check their answers with other pairs. T gives the answer key as feedback. The matching activity finishes.

Semi-Controlled Practice (1-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T groups the students into pairs. T gives instructions for the open-ended dialogues activity. T demos the activity. T takes notes during the practice period. Peers swap cards and continue the activity. They ask and answer. Teacher gives FB on the board. The activity finishes.

Freer Activity (1-10 minutes) • To expose the students to speak fluently

T gets students to work in pairs. T gives instructions for a comparison activity through two people's pictures which shows their plans for the coming year. T demos. Pairs compare these two people, talk about how their plans are different and use the target language through this freer speaking task. Teacher observes the students. T finishes the activity. T starts another freer pactise; priority ranking on the target language. T groups the ss into pairs. T gives instructions. T passes the Hos. Students discuss. T finishes the activity.

Extra Freer practice • To practice the target language more through speaking practice, if there is time left.

T will ask students to stand up and come to the center of the class. T will do brainstorming by simply asking what they have learned in this lesson. Ss discuss in the center of the class altogether. T stands among them and praise the ss. The lesson finishes.
