Year 3 level

Description

(Period 4) This lesson will introduce students to the prepositions of place: above, across, along, and around. Students will learn to use these prepositions in context and practice speaking skills through interactive games.

Materials

Abc Sentence Cards
Abc Powerpoint
Abc Sticky Balls x2
Abc Blocks

Main Aims

  • Students will be able to use the prepositions "above," "across," "along," and "around" correctly in sentences.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will be able to identify the prepositions in context. Students will be able to use the prepositions in simple sentences.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Watch a video about Prepositions.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Read a short story or poem that uses the target prepositions. For example: "The bird flew above the tree. The squirrel ran across the road. The ant walked along the path. The dog chased its tail around and around." Discussion: Ask comprehension questions about the story, such as: "Where did the bird fly?" "What did the squirrel do?"

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Point to objects in the classroom and say sentences using the target prepositions. For example: "The ceiling is above the floor." "The window is across from the door." (Have students repeat the sentences together.)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Pass the sentence: In this game, students are divided into two teams. Each team has a ball placed on a desk or table. The teacher shows a picture or sentence on a screen or whiteboard. When the teacher says "Go!", the player closest to the desk on each team must find the corresponding sentence, say it aloud, and pass the information to the next teammate. The sentence must be passed from player to player in a chain until the last team member says it. Once the last player has said the sentence, they must race to the desk and grab their team's ball. The first team to successfully complete the sentence relay and grab their ball is declared the winner.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Tower Blocks Race Game: In this game, students are divided into two teams. The teacher displays a sentence or picture on the board. All students must answer and say the sentence. When the teacher says "Go!", the teams will take turns placing blocks to build a tower. However, each player must say the sentence aloud before placing their block. The winner is the first team to successfully build a tower of 10 blocks without collapsing.
