Procedure (45-59 minutes)
The teacher will start the class depicting a student holding a school report with low grades on it.Some adjectives describing the person in the picture will be elicited. The teacher will also try to set the context asking the students questions like "what do you think happened?" or" why do you think it happened?".Having elicited the neceesary vocabulary, and made the students engaged in the subject, the teacher will move to the next step.
Using the elicited vocabulary the teacher will provide the target structure using the elicited vocabulary emphasising the contarction and will also follow giving other sentences using the target structure. Sentences such as:He should've studied. He shouldn't have played computer games so much.
the instructor will write the sentence on the board highlighting the important linguistic components like should, have, and past participle.
The teacher will attempt to better clarify the meaning asking CCQs like:Did he fail the exam yesterday?Did he study for the exam? Was it a good idea for him to study?Did he study?
Using the sentences written on the board the teacher will start a drill(substitution drill) to help the students familiarise with the structure get used to the way it is pronounced.
Having grouped the students into pairs, the teacher will give away some pictures asking the students to make one affirmative and one negative sentence using the target language. The pictures can depict:A driver who had an accident,A person at the hospital due to smoking,A man who has lost his wallet..... Feedback can be provided by showing the photos in large scale and inviting the pairs to share the sentences they have made.
This part can be used either as free practice or homework. The class will be made into groups and a text about a controversial character from ancient or contemporary history will be given to each group .After reading the text, the students will try to criticise the person's life using should've or Shouldn't have or anyother relevant structure. The feedback can be a group presentation,a writing or a debate.
