Procedure (34-42 minutes)
Display a picture of some people in front of a computer in different countries. Ask SS the next questions: What do you see? Do you have friends that live in another country/state/city? What do you do to communicate? Send a task in Google Forms with the image of our email. Ask them to read quickly for 1 minute and choose the answer for question number 1: The email is about...... ( social situation) ICQ: how much time do you have? (1 minute) Check the answer together and then tell SS that we have different functions in the email, they have to read again for 2 minutes and choose the order of those functions, for this they will use the same link. Reason for writing (2) sign off (4) greeting (1) apology (3) ICQs What are they? (Functions) / In which order? PROBLEMS WITH MEANING Problem: they might not know what is the meaning of the functions listed on the layout. Solution: ask them to guess by the context or by eliminating the options but avoid telling them directly the meaning, use CCQs like: what sentence do we have for this function?...then the meaning is.... FORM Show the SS the next examples and ask questions: Hi Elizabeth and Omar, - What did I change here? (the names) / Do I have to write something after this sentence? (no, we start a new paragraph) A quick message to say I am really sorry- what about here, what did I change? ( subject and verb be) We are really sorry, we didn´t tell you about the party- What did I change? (information after subject we) / What do we have after we? ( a verb in simple past negative). All the best, Luis -What did I change here? (the name) / Do I have a sentence immediately after this? (no, we write our name below) For sentences 1 and 4 ask: what do they have in common? (they have a comma and we write below them) PROBLEMS WITH FORM Problem: They might not remember that we have to use a comma after sentences 1 and 4. Solution: use a marker to circle the commas and they have a visual reference APPROPRIACY -Show an image with the phrases reviewed and another one with formal phrases and ask: which phrases would you use for an email to your boss? ( the second ones) / so the first group of phrases are for a formal or informal context? Ask SS to check the next slides on jamboard, there they will find a template where to write their emails, assign one slide per learner and send them to BORs to work individually. Model hot they can use jamboard to start with their writings. ICQs: Where do you have to write your email? (their slide on jamboard) Do you have to work in teams? When they come back show them a checklist that they will use to identify if their partners writings have those elements, assign one writing to each student and give them 2 minutes, ask to write down their feedback in a notebook or a document online. When they finish, send them in pairs to BOR´s to give each other feedback using their notes.
