(Period 6-Phonics) This phonics lesson is designed to introduce and practice the sounds and words associated with the letters A, B, C, and D.

Materials

Abc Song
Abc Ball with phonic letters written on it (a, b, c, d)
Abc Chair
Abc Powerpoint

Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice the phonics sounds and corresponding words for the letters A, B, C, and D, helping students to recognize and pronounce these sounds correctly.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop students' speaking and listening skills through interactive and engaging games.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Warmer: Listen and watch a phonics song video

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Present new phonics words and letters Activity: Yoga Pose The teacher displays a picture on the screen, and the students must identify the corresponding yoga pose. Once they've done the pose, they then say the phonics sounds associated with the image.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Activity: Word and Sound Focus Show each flashcard or object one by one (apple, bag, carrot, desk). Emphasize the initial sound: “This is an apple. It starts with the /a/ sound.” Repeat for each item: “bag” (b), “carrot” (c), “desk” (d). Encourage students to repeat the sounds after you.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Game: Phonics Basketball Each team lines up, and each player receives a ball with a letter written on it. The player must say the sound associated with the letter and provide an example word. After that, they attempt to shoot the ball into the basket. Each successful shot earns two points for the team. The team with the highest total points at the end of the game wins.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Game: Phonics Freeze Dance Play some music and have the students dance around the room. When the music stops, call out a letter (A, B, C, or D). Students freeze and make the sound of the letter and say a word that starts with that letter: “A, /a/, apple!” Repeat with different letters.

Controlled Practice 2 (5-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for practice

Musical Chairs Game In this game, one student from each team is selected. They choose a ball from a basket, which has a new phonics word written on it. The student must say the phonics word on their ball. While the music plays, the students walk around the chair. When the music stops, the students try to sit on the chair. The student who successfully sits down earns points for their team.
