To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about Running late for work in the context of Business life
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of business life.
Procedure (32-46 minutes)
To set the context I will play a game of charades with the ss. I will not speak a word from the start of the lesson and encourage them to speak, I will act out my 'morning routine' when I am on my way to work and show the ss that I want them to say what i am doing. I will not be satisfied until they give me the answer present tense. I will start with waking up and then showering, easting breakfast, brushing my teeth etc.
I am going to hold up a picture of characters from the listening and elicit predictions from the ss. I am looking for things like 'Frank is late for work and Janet and liz are waiting for him.'. This will get them thinking about the listening and further set the context for the listening. I will write the predictions on the whiteboard in preparation for gist listening.
The ss will now listen for gist. The activity I will give to Accomplish this will be to check whether their predictions, Which are written on the WB, are Correct or incorrect. I will only let the ss listen once and then discuss in pairs to confirm their answers and maybe fill in any they didnt quite catch before whole class feedback.
Before giving this task I will teach just a few important pieces of vocabulary I feel the ss should know before listening for specific information. I will teach only 3 words or phrases; Looking happy, Contract and Oh dear. The rest have actually been covered in the previous lesson. After pre-eliciting the vocab I will give the ss th HO they should answer. I will let the ss listen and fill out the answers on their own. I will then Have them discuss their answers and then if I feel necessary the ss can listen one more time and discuss. Then I will give out an AK and they will check in their pairs.
For this Exercise the students will split into 2 groups. Each group will get a similar picture but the people in the picture will be doing different actions. Each group will first discuss all of the continuous activities in the picture. After this the ss from 'group a' will find a partner in 'group b' and they will discuss what they see in their own picture without showing their partner and try to find the differences. This is great freer practice for the students and fits perfectly into our context.
The ss will play in their groups a game of charades, very similar to the first activity done with the teacher. They will take turns to act out different daily activities. without speaking, and their group must guess what it is they are doing. Good freer speaking practice and focusing still on teh present continuous tense. A nice fun activity to finish up with.
