Description

(Period 5) This lesson is designed for Grade 1 learners to review and practice identifying school items through engaging and interactive activities.

Materials

Abc Powerpoint
Abc Dice
Abc Flashcards
Abc Cups
Abc Realia

Main Aims

  • To review and practice recognizing and naming common school items using the structure "Is it a (book)? Yes, it is. / No, it isn't."

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop speaking and listening skills through engaging and interactive games.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Activity: Story Time with School Items Instructions: Read a short, simple story aloud that references various school items. For example: “Tom went to school. He put his book on the desk. He took out his pencil and started drawing with his crayons. His ruler was in his pencil case.” As you read, hold up or point to the items when they are mentioned to provide context. After the story, briefly review the items mentioned.

Exposure (2-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The teacher displays real objects or pictures of the vocabulary items (book, desk, chair, etc.). Introduce each item by asking the class, "Is it a (book)?" and answer yourself: "Yes, it is" or "No, it isn't." After each item, ask the students to repeat the answers after you. Example: The teacher holds up a pencil. "Is it a pencil?" (Pause) "Yes, it is! Repeat after me: Is it a pencil? Yes, it is."

Controlled Practice 1 (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Game: Line Up and Guess This is a game in which all teams participate. Two lines are formed in the classroom: "Yes, it is" and "No, it isn't." The teacher displays a shape on the PowerPoint screen and asks a question, and students have fifteen seconds to decide if they know what's behind the shape. Once the time is up, students line up behind the answer they believe is correct. The teacher then reveals the image, and the students who line up correctly win the round.

Controlled Practice 2 (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Game: Tower Game It involves the whole class answering a question based on a picture shown by the teacher. Two players from each team are then selected for a challenge. Upon the teacher's command, these players race to build a tower using the provided cups. Once the towers are built, the players must rush to find the correct answer card corresponding to the question asked earlier. The first player to correctly grab the answer card wins the round for their team.

Controlled Practice 3 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more practice of the target language

Game: Roll the Dice Three students from each team are selected to answer a question. Once they are at the front of the class, the teacher says, "Go!" and the students simultaneously roll a dice. The student who rolls the highest number wins the round and earns five points for their team.
