Speaking - Job interview
Beginners level

Description

In this lesson, students will improve their speaking skills in the context of a job interview. In the previous lessons they have been introduced to the vocabulary and grammar of abilities (can/can't). The students will be introduced to vocabulary and functional language in the context of a job interview.

Materials

Abc Role play

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a roleplay in the context of a job interview.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of occupations and functional language in the context of a job interview.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-5 minutes) • To set the context of the lesson

Teacher shows pictures of jobs on the WB and asks students if they know what they are. I will ask them if they have a job, what their jobs are or what their job was if they are retired now.

Vocabulary testing (3-5 minutes) • To test the jobs vocabulary

Teacher gives the students a handout with a matching exercise, students have to match the right definition to the right job. When students are finished, they can check their answers with the students next to them. We will do WC feedback and in the next stage we will drill the vocabulary.

Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of the vocabulary used in job interviews

I will show the pictures again, this time one by one, elicit the jobs and drill the vocabulary, then concept check if needed and write the vocabulary on the WB and put the stress. In this stage I will also introduce functional language the students need for the freer practice role play. Vocabulary: - kindergarten teacher - au pair - secretary - journalist - sports instructor - art and music teacher - to take short hand (I will introduce this word, maybe it is too difficult for the students, but they need to know this word for the role play) Functional language: - very good at - not good at - to be able to

Semi-controlled practice (3-5 minutes) • To prepare the students for the freer practice

Teacher puts the students in pairs and gives them a handout. They have to discuss the abilities for a journalist, using the following words: A journalist "is able to, can, is good at, is not good at". By doing this discussion students will be prepared for the freer speaking practice.

Delayed correction (1-3 minutes) • To highlight vocabulary or functional language which the students used incorrect

While the students are doing the discussion, the teacher monitors and writes the errors on a paper. We will do WC feedback and write the errors on the WB. The teacher will elicit the right answers from the students.

Freer speaking practice (18-20 minutes) • To provide the students practice in using the vocabulary and functional language in a role play

Students will do a role play, The teacher divides the class in two groups, one group will be employer and the other group will be employee. They will be given a card. The employers will have a card with WANTED and the job description. The employees will have a card with You can: and the abilities they have. The object of the game is for every employee to find a job, and for every employer to find a suitable person for the job. To do this, employers will have to move around the class, interviewing candidates for the jobs. They should only take candidates who fulfill all the requirements listed on the advertisement. The game is finished when everyone has a job.

Feedback (and Error Correction) (1-3 minutes) • To check if the students had any difficulties while doing the freer practice

If there is time left, we will do WC feedback and error correction.
