Main Aims

  • Students will be able to ask and answer questions about common school items using the structure "Is it a (book)? Yes, it is. / No, it isn't."

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will practice pronunciation, listening, and speaking skills in a fun and interactive environment.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Sing the "Hello" song and play "Where's the Rubber?". Teacher holds up a rubber band for the class to see and then hides it in one of her hands. The students must guess whether the rubber band is in the teacher's left or right hand. The teacher then reveals their hands, and the students who guessed correctly get a star. The game continues with multiple rounds of hiding and guessing.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher displays real objects or pictures of the vocabulary items (book, desk, chair, etc.). Introduce each item by asking the class, "Is it a (book)?" and answer yourself: "Yes, it is" or "No, it isn't." After each item, ask the students to repeat the answers after you. Example: Teacher holds up a pencil. "Is it a pencil?" (Pause) "Yes, it is! Repeat after me: Is it a pencil? Yes, it is."

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Place all the items or pictures of them on a table or the board. Point to one item without saying its name and ask the class, "Is it a (pencil)?" Encourage students to answer "Yes, it is" or "No, it isn't" together. Repeat with different items, gradually encouraging individual students to answer.

Controlled Practice 1 (8-11 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Shoot the Rings Shoot the rings is a team game where each player gets a small hoop. The game begins with the teacher asking a student, "Is it a (crayon)?" The student must respond with "Yes, it is" or "No, it isn't." After answering, the student attempts to shoot the hoop into the cone. Each successful shot earns five points for the team. This process is repeated for all team members before moving on to the next team. The team with the highest score at the end wins.

Controlled Practice 2 (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Game: Last Man Standing In this game, at least nine students are chosen, three from each team. Each student is assigned a number from one to six, just like on a dice. The teacher then rolls a virtual dice. Any student whose number matches the rolled number is out of the game. Before sitting down, the eliminated student must answer a question like, "Is it a bag?" with "Yes, it is" or "No, it isn't." The game continues until only one student remains. The winning student's team earns ten points.
