Description

In this lesson, learners practice listening for gist and specific information in the context of different types of homes around the word. They will have an audio clip played followed by exercises based on listening for specific information. This will be followed by the ss practicing controlled speaking in pairs.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Display pictures of different types of homes around the world to set the context.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre- teach vocabulary Show pictures of some of the presumed difficult words in the lesson : verandah, flat, house, walls, blinds, near, centre, old style, modern, church,village. Other presumed difficult words to be shown only if explanation is asked for: bed and breakfast, workplace, exciting, tourists, jobs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Distribute the H/O. Set up the listening task. Instruct the ss to listen to the audio first. Demonstrate the first one from Ex 1 to the learners on the WB. Allow ss to check in pairs. Get ss to write the numbers on the WB for feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (15-18 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Instruct ss to look at EX.2. Pair ss or grp in 3 depending on the total number of learners. Play the audio clip. Demonstrate the first one with the whole class. Let the ss continue in pairs/ grps. Pause and play the audio clip, as required for the exercise work. Allow ss to check in pairs/grps. Play the audio again and let them check. Provide the answer keys around the room. Ask for feedback - Did they find the exercise easy or difficult? Demonstrate Ex 3 with ss. Let ss continue with each other first and then as a pair.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • Controlled Speaking Practice

Demonstrate Ex 4 with a ss. Let ss continue with with each other first and then as pairs. Monitor the ss and take notes.
