Writing lesson
Upper Intermediate level

Description

Students will write something great!

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a letter in the context of seeking an internship

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using sample letters and CVs in the context of applying for a new job
  • To provide review and practice of language used for letter writing in the context of cover letters for job applications.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set the context of a cover letter for a CV

Give each pair of Ss a cover letter. Talk with your partner about its meaning, how it is used, is it sent alone in the envelope or email?

Examples (3-5 minutes) • To provide explicit models for layout and lexis

Samples: Task to find structural examples to imitate. Students will come to the board and circle the normative characteristics of the letters. Each set of circles should be followed by CCQs. elicit the basic format of a cover letter from the Ss - style, layout, register - what greetings and such shall we use? - What phrases might be important here?

Exercise 1 (5-7 minutes) • To improve accuracy in greetings, closings, and layout

Students are given a small piece of paper on which to write all the formulaic pieces of the letter: greetings, closing, addresses, date, signature.... but just squiggly lines for the body of the text. Take 1 minute and think of a company or type of company that you could apply to for your DREAM JOB. Where is the company and what is their address? Ss will exchange their paper with another member of the class to get it checked.

Functional Language exercise (7-9 minutes) • To introduce some useful 'cover-letter-appropriate' language

T will divide the class into groups of 3-5, and ask them to begin thinking of key words or expressions that they might use in a cover letter, then... Each group places their best words on the board (7). T will give groups of Ss the sample letters and ask them to come up with more key words or expressions from them. (The group adds another 7-8 words to the board.) Drill any vocabulary that needs it: MFP previous, reference/referee, resume/CV, major in, empahsis, enthusiasm, express interest, intern(ship), highly motivated, well-qualified, leadership ability, teamwork, look forward to, experience, opportunity, problem-solving, skills

Draft 1 (12-15 minutes) • To create a first draft of a connected, meaningful text

Now, on a clean piece of white paper, let's put down the format of the letter. "Let's write down the basics for the cover letter." Then the Ss will use the functional language which they have acquired to write the letter. The focus here is on fluency, while it is on accuracy in the surrounding exercises.

Check/Edit (5-7 minutes) • To provide FB to Ss

Teacher will give out red pens... :) First, each S will check their own work. Then they will work with a peer to gain additional FB. Meanwhile T will monitor, and at the end provide examples of both positive sentences and some that need improving, as well as possibly repeated errors.

(EXTRA) Second Draft (5-8 minutes) • To correct and polish the original draft

If time permits, it would be great to have a polished draft for Ss to leave with. Thus, if there is extra time, we will work on a second draft. Again, this draft may not be perfect, but it should put Ss into a place where they are more confident in the quality of their work. T will again monitor to give input and help as requested.
