Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of wedding lexis in the context of weddings and marriage

Procedure

Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set the context of the lesson

T asks: who is married? T asks: for how long? T shows a picture of a wedding using the overhead projector. T elicits the word wedding and drills it before recording it on the W/B.

Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of the lexis set used in weddings

Ss are asked to identify the people in pictures 1 and 2 in pairs. T gives the first picture, then elicits responses and clarifies the meaning. The words are drilled and thus recorded. Stress is highlighted. Words: bride/groom/the bridesmaids/the best men CQ: are the bridesmaids the bride's best friends? (yes) CQ: are the best men the groom's best friends? (yes) and more if necessary T gives the second picture to the pairs and repeats this process. Word: guests T tells the students to discuss what the bride and groom wear in the wedding in pairs. (1 min max) T hands out the pictures of the tuxedo and wedding gown. T asks: which one does the bride wear? (Ss hold up the wedding gown. The word is introduced, drilled and recorded. T asks; which one does the groom wear? (Ss hold up the Tuxedo. The word is introduced, drilled and recorded.

Controlled practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide bring the lexis set together and provide a written record for the students

T tells the Ss that he will give them five questions to answer. (if T feels there are some Ss who did not understand some of the words, this will be done in pairs) T: write the correct word for each question. T has the Ss come u and write the answers on the W/B one by one. WC check the answers.

Semi-controlled practice (3-5 minutes) • To get the Ss talikng using the previous grammar and to prepare them for the other stages of production

T quickly draws a man and a woman (stick figures) on the W/B and gives them names (Ali and Fatma) T writes: before the wedding, they should... Ss are put in pairs and asked to discuss this. As the pairs are nearly finished, they will be asked to check their answers with another pair. T monitors and records mistakes.

Semi-controlled practice (3-5 minutes) • To get the Ss talikng using the previous grammar and to prepare them for the other stages of production

T refers to the W/B and adds: after the wedding, they should... T asks them to once again discuss in pairs. Early finishers will be asked to check with another pair. T monitors and records errors.

Delayed correction (2-4 minutes) • To encourage accuracy for the grammar of should and furthermore highlight other sentences which are either incorrect, or correct

As the pairs are speaking, T records some correct and incorrect sentences on the W/B. Once the students finish, T asks them to look at the W/B. T sais: is this sentence correct? T elicits responses and corrects the sentence if deemed necessary. T repeats this process for the all the sentences recorded. (note: not all the sentences recorded will be incorrect)

Freer speaking practice (7-10 minutes) • To get the students taliking about Ali and Fatma's wedding in detail

T sais: now we want to plan Ali and Fatma's wedding. What do we need for the wedding? How much do we need to spend for everything? T illustrates on the W/B: we should buy (a cake)(1000 Turkish lira) T shows the hand out and distributes it. T sais: but first, we have to change our seats. Please stand up and get a piece of paper from me. After everyone does so, T puts the students in groups of three or four according to their colors. Ss begin planning in their groups.

Feedback (2-3 minutes) • To make the students group work matter and to compare production

T sais: now, with your group, add up how much you are going to spend. T provides an example on the W/B: 1000 + 200 + 100 = 1300. T gives 1-2 minutes to the Ss to do this and then they report their spending to the class. T records their answers on the W/B according to groups and asks: who has the cheapest wedding?

Personalization (3-5 minutes) • To end the class in a personalized manner

T sais: now, talk about what happens in a Turkish wedding. Ss are told to work in their groups again. T monitors and although L1 might be used a lot in this stage, T encourages the Ss to use L2.
