Main Aims
-
To provide clarification, review and practice of Adjective Order in the context of Celebrity heroes
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Celebrity Heroes in the context of obessesions
Procedure (31-42 minutes)
Set the context by starting a discussion asking students who their favorite celebrity hero is? followed by why? to what extent they would go to meet him/her? whether obsessing over a celebrity hero is okay or not? and at what point does this obsession become unhealthy/dangerous? Elicit responses from the students, encourage them to share their opinions.
Show students the text they are about to be given, let them know the paragraphs are not in the correct order, and that they only have to quickly read through the text to choose the best title for the article. Write the options (for the title) on the board. Let the students know they have 3 minutes. Distribute the handout. Do a quick whole class feedback.
Ask the students to look at the highlighted words in the text and match them to the definitions provided on the original handout (Reading: Question 3). Give them 2 minutes. Ask them to check their answers with a partner. Do a quick whole class feedback.
Modal on the whiteboard an example (describe a movie). Elicit and clarify the meaning of adjective order and the correct placement of different categories of adjectives. Show students the handout (TEST 1: Adjective Order), give instructions and let them know they have 3 minutes to complete the task. Instruct the students to check their answers from the original text.
Show the students a print out of the table (adjective order). Explain the table order and clarify meaning and form (if required). Distribute copies of the table. Give the students 30secs to read the table. Ask the students to refer to the table to complete the next activity. Explain, give instructions (3 minutes) and distribute handout (TEST 2: Adjective Order, Exercise 1). For feedback elicit answers from the students. Use CCQs to check for understanding of meaning and form. Ask the students to unfold the handout (TEST 2: Adjective Order, Exercise 2) and and take 3 minutes to complete the task. Do peer-check.
Write the table (adjective order) categories on the board. Divide the class into two teams. Explain the game (each team has to add an adjective under one category on the table to describe the Noun - both teams continue adding adjectives, until there is no room left for a logical/appropriate addition or until a team places an adjective incorrectly) - use CCQs to check for understanding of instructions. Give them the first word to start the game.
