Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about news stories in the context of news

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of short news stories for a newspaper in the context of news

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show Ss pictures of Turkish newspapers to attract their attention to the topic. T asks them about the one they like most and the column they usually read in that newspaper as well.

Reading for gist (6-9 minutes) • To have Ss be familiar with the text and use their reading sub-skills (skimming)

- T will give Ss a handout with news stories and some headlines as well, and have them skim the text in three minutes and choose the suitable headline for each story. In pairs, Ss check their answers. Then, T will give them the answers sheet to have them check their answers as a class. FB: PW, WC

Reading for details (10-12 minutes) • To have Ss use reading techniques (scanning)

T will give the students a handout with questions about the text to be read and answered in five minutes. Ss work in pairs and check their answers. T will give Ss a gap-fill handout and have them fill in the gaps with the highlighted words in the text. Ss work in pairs and check. FB: check in pairs, whole-class eliciting.

Vocab contextual guessing (9-12 minutes) • To improve Ss' ability to understand the meaning of words within a context.

T will put Ss in groups of four or three and give them cuts of papers with words (taken from the text) with their meanings and ask them to match the words to their meanings. T asks each group to go around and check the answers of other groups. T will put the answers sheets on their tables to have them check their answers. T will elicit the pronunciation of the words from the students (with stress) and write the transcription on the board.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned and have Ss correct themselves as well

T will put the Ss in groups of four and give them white sheets of papers and ask them to write three short news stories without headlines in five minutes. When they finish, Ss will exchange texts and suggest headlines for the texts of other groups and correct the mistakes that these texts have. And the group with the most reasonable stories and with the least mistakes will win. FB: GW, error correction eliciting
