Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of first times.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about a day at secondary school/ meeting my wife in the context of first time

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First, display 2 pictures of children crying the first day at school. Ask SS: "what do you see in the images?" ( children crying, sad children) and wait for their answer. Ask: "why are they sad or crying?" ( first day at school), wait for their answer. Ask: what do you remember from your first day at school? Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Mention to the SS that we will listen to 2 people talking about similar situations, pass them the link to Google Forms and ask them to listen to Helen and Josh and choose which picture represents their stories, a or b for Helen, c or d for Josh. Mention that it is not necessary to submit their answers. Ask them to say their answers (b and c). ICQs: which options are for Helen/Josh? (a-b/c-d) / do you need to send your answers? (no) Then listen again and ask to choose who mentioned the next phrases: I remember my first.... One thing I will never forget is the first time... Then.... I was.... In the end.... At first.... Mention that it is possible to repeat some options ICQs: Can you repeat the answers? Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Useful language: I remember my first.... One thing I will never forget is the first time... Then.... I was.... In the end.... At first.... MEANING: Ask SS to match the phrases listed above with the functions written above as well. Use the CCQ: what is the phrase/word/ expression that we use to indicate…./ to express…. They will have the phrases and definitions in sticky notes, using BORs to work in 2 different teams for 2 minutes. Come back and check the answers. ICQs: how much time do you have? ( 2 minutes) Which jamboard do you have to use? (number one or number two) Answers: I remember my first.... phrase that we can use to express an activity we did in the past or something that happened to us for the first time One thing I will never forget is the first time... phrase that we use to indicate a very important event in our lives that happened the first time and is in our memories Then.... word that we use to express something to happened next or after an action I was.... expression to indicate how we felt/ what we were doing/ where we were in a moment in the past In the end.... expression that we use to indicate the final part of a story At first.... expression that we use to indicate at the beginning / the first part of a story Form: Show the SS the next examples in two more slides in jamboard I remember my first day at work One thing I will never forget is the first time I visited another country I saw a tall man and then he talked to me I was very nervous when I saw that beautiful woman In the end, my father called me and told me everything was fine At first, I didn´t know what to do Ask SS: What is the part of the sentence that we can not change? ( underline the part that they indicate) Ask SS: What do we have after this word/phrase? (a subject plus a verb….an adjective ….) Ask: if we can change this part, can you give me another example? ( delete my example and write theirs) PRONUNCIATION. Read the sentences one by one and ask the next: o O o I remember my first day at work - how many syllables? (3) / where is the stress? Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Using the same jamboard, show SS an image with different options for them to choose, explain that they have to choose one, and talk about that experience using the phrases, they have to take turns to speak. Before they go to BORs for 5 minutes, use one student to model the exercise. when they come back, change the teams and give 5 more minutes. ICQs: how much time do you have? ( 5 minutes) / Does one person speaks and the other only listens? Feedback and Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

In case of noticing some misktakes, use last slide in jamboard to write their sentences and elicit the mistakes they can notice.
