Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy in conversations conveying surprise or the lack thereof.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist when hearing conversations about surprise.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the context of conversation.

They will see a picture of a husband and wife seated at the kitchen table having a discussion. They will be given 3 minutes to discuss what they believe is being said.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

During this stage, they will match a phrase to a sentence individually, then as pairs, and justify their choice in the group.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In this lesson, the students will practice what they have learned by marking through an inappropriate response to a sentence. They will then have to justify their answer.

Highlighting (8-12 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The students will listen to an audio of a conversation using terminology for surprise and lack of surprise. They will listen for tone, pitch, and hear demeanor in the voices of the actors. There will be a follow up practice for them to mark off what they heard in the conversation.

Clarification (3-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

We will discuss form, pronunciation, and some idioms.

Freer practice • To set lesson context and engage students in the context of conversation.

Students will answer questions based on the audio, individually and then in pairs.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

During this part of the lesson, they will discuss a time they were surprised without using the word surprised.
