Main Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about children in the context of stereotypes around gender and color

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of stereotypes around gender and color

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students will be asked what toys they played with as they were growing up. Did they only play with cars, construction toys and toy weapons, or dolls, stuffed animals and dress-up clothes or both? How do they think gender affects the kind of toys children grow up with?

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students will be informed about the meaning, from and pronunciation of the following vocabularies used in the text by clarification, and then they will try to fill the gaps with the vocabularies individually. They will check their answers with the whole class. Delicate - Influence - Package (verb) - Emerge

While-Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The students will listen to track and try to answer the following questions: 1. What is surprising about dressing children in pink or blue? 2. Do Alison and Natasha agree about the color of children's toys?

While-Listening #2 (13-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will be asked to read the questions on page 32 part d and then the audio file will be played again. The students need to choose options a,b or c for each question. They will have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs then we will check the answers with the whole class. Students will need to say why they have marked each sentence True or False and they will need to support their ideas if they come up with different answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (13-16 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will be asked to talk to each other in groups of 3 or 4 about what are some of the ways they think is best to raise children. According to tradition, or free from stereotypes?
