Description

In this lesson, students will learn and practise the past tense of the verb be, was / were. Students will gist read the text and then read it detailed. The TL is presented through a text. Following this, students will work through inductive analysis of meaning and form of the past tense of the verb be. Next, students will practise the pronunciation of the TL. The sub-aim of the lesson is to practise the TL in relation to the topic by the productive skill of speaking.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the past simple was / were in the context of description of holidays/trips.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in the context of trips / holidays.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T projects the questions on the WB and nominates students to answer them. During this, try to know the names of the sts.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text.

T gives the HO1 to sts and sets 1 minute to have sts do gist reading. ICQs Will you read it slowly or quickly? Will you answer questions in part B? Following this, T asks sts to read the text again in detail so that sts can answer True and False questions. T conducts WC feedback after each task.

Highlighting (12-14 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language (was / were)

Sts will try to discover the TL. T tells them to look at the back page of the HO1 and explains that sts will work in pairs to answer the questions. ICQs Are you working alone (individually) or with your friend? (Pair work) Can you find the answers of some of the questions by looking at the text? (Yes) T monitors during this stage and tries to take notes. After sts finish, T conducts WC feedback.

Clarification (4-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T asks the following questions to clarify the meaning and form. When I say I was in Siena in March, it means past or present? (Past) When I say I am in Siena, it means past or present? (Present) Where am I now? (in the classroom) Is it ok to say I am in Siena? (No) Where was I a month ago? (In Siena) Is it ok to say I was in Siena last month? (Yes) Is it ok to say You was in Siena? (No) Elicit You WERE in Siena. (pay attention if sts confuse the singular and plural of you) Pronunciation T projects the sentences and elicits the stress from sts. T clarifies the pronunciation and sts drill after the T. He was on holiday. /hi wəz ɒn ˈhɒlədeɪ/ (unstressed) Was he on holiday? /wəz hi ɒn ˈhɒlədeɪ/ (unstressed) Yes, he was. / No, he wasn’t. /jes hi wɒz/ /nəʊ hi wɒznt/ (stressed) Were they at home? /wə ˈðeɪ ət həʊm/ (unstressed) Yes, they were. No, they weren’t. /jes ˈðeɪ wɜː/ /nəʊ ˈðeɪ wɜːnt/ (stressed)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T gives the HO2 with exercises and asks Sts to do it individually. Then, sts check in pairs. WC feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with semi-controlled speaking practice of the target language

T tells sts that they will describe one of their holidays to their pairs. T projects the useful language so that sts can do the task easily. If time, T can ask about what sts have learned in that lesson.
