In this lesson, the students will have a listening lesson about first meetings, they will discuss accuracy o first impressions and meeting famous people. then they will listen to three discussions about meeting people for the first time.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about meeting people for the first time in the context of first meetings

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion and narrating in the context of first meetings

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Put the picture on the wb, and have an open discussion about: what do you notice when you meet people for the first time? personalize the topic.engage the students in the topic an open class discussion.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

now discuss in groups for 4min:(write the Qs on the wb) what do you notice when you meet people for the first time? heir voice, their hair and face, their clothes or something else? Are your first impressions of people accurate? have you ever been completely wrong about someone? clarify the meaning o accurate and impression, drill nominate groups which had interesting answers to report to the class for feed-back " now we are going to listen to three people *show* discussing how they met one o these people, Nixon/Vieri? before you listen look at these photos and try to predict which person met which one o these people? "

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Now listen and match the people. peer-check feeback

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

"listen again and make a note of where and when these people met and what they said to each other?" peer-check give out the text to check the answers. Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

in groups discuss: "Have you ever met anyone famous? where were you? what do you remember about them?" feedback
