Description

In this listening, we're covering new vocabulary words in the context of a story about a war between communists and anarchists in Paris.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about war in the context of communists and anarchists

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of politics in the context of war between two groups of people

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students are going to see a famous pictures from a magazine in the 1960s and they're going to answer the questions: "Where do you think the people are?" "What do you think is happening?"

Pre-Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students and the teacher are going to check these vocabulary words. (The students will tell the class the meanings if they know, before the teacher and the teacher writes the meanings on the board.) demonstration - politics - communist - anarchist - revolution - furious

While-Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The students will listen to the audio file once. Then they will listen to audio file in 4 parts and they're going to answer these questions: "When did she come back to Paris?" "Was she a communist?" "Why was she sitting on her friend's shoulders?" "What flag was she holding and why?" "Why her grandfather was angry?"

While-Listening #2 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

They are going to read part d on page 15 in 30 seconds and then they're going to listen to the audio file one more time and answer the questions in 1 minute individually. Then we check the answers together.

Post-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students are going to answer this question: "Do you think she is sorry that she was in that photo?" And the teacher will choose one or two students to give the class a short summary about what they've learnt from this audio file.
