Upper Intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
Grammar: Past Modals (context: Mysteries )
Subsidiary Aims
-
Listening for detail
Procedure (30-40 minutes)
Start by setting the context for the lesson in which the target language will be covered; mysteries. Pre-teach through elicitation the necessary vocabulary for the listening activity (audio). The students will be given a handout of the target language in which they will have to match the meanings to the correct words (taken from the grammar box). They will be asked to do the activity individually and will be given 2 minutes to complete the task. Answers will be checked in pairs followed by a quick whole class feedback.
The students will be given a handout of the questions for the listening activity (pg. 100 ex. 2) and clear instructions before the audio is played; they will listen to the audio and write down the answers. The students will first check their answers in pairs after which there will be a whole class feedback session in which answers will be elicited from the students. In the event of majority of the students not being able to get the answers from the audio, it will be played again. The students will be given tape-script A at the end of the stage.
Students will be asked to discuss in pairs what they think is the explanation for Clara's disappearance. They will be given two minutes to share their views with one another before they get to hear the audio (Tape-script B). After listening to the audio, there will be a quick whole class discussion for two minutes in which the students will get to share their views on the audio explanation of Clara's disappearance.
Using the TTT approach, the students will be given an activity on the target language (past modals) within the same context of mysteries. They will be instructed to work individually and will be given three minutes to circle the correct modal (Exercise 4). After checking their answers in pairs there will be a whole class feedback in which errors/mistakes will be corrected through elicitation/explanation. At the end of the stage the students will be given a copy of the answer key.
To test the students understanding of the target language they will be given a final controlled practice activity before the lesson ends (H0: practice - if time). Depending on the time left the students will be asked to complete this activity individually and then compare their answers amongst each other. Elicit from the students and do a whole class feedback.
