Description

In this lesson, the students will have the opportunity to read about magic and illusions. They will practice the reading skill using a variety of sub-skills like gist and reading for details besides the contextual guessing skill.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, detailed and contextual guessing reading about magicians and tricks in the context of secrets.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary used when talking about performing a scene in the context of magic tricks. And using this vocabulary in speaking activity.

Procedure

Lead in (6-8 minutes) • To set the context and get the students engaged

The students watch a video for a magician performing a trick. The video will get them enthusiastic to know what is next. T asks students "What do you think the lesson is about?" Ss work in groups and answer these two questions 1-Have you ever been to a magic show? 2-Do you know any magic tricks? to have a very short/interesting discussion.

Vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • Contextual guessing and introducing difficult vocabulary

Ex 1 page 96 Before replacing the words in ex1 the students will be given 30 seconds (gist reading) to answer this question: "Did the knife kill anyone?" No (Whole class feedback) ICQs: Are you reading or writing?(Reading) Do you need to understand every word to answer the question? (No) How long do you have? (30 seconds) Students will be given 3 minutes (contextual guessing) to replace the words in italics with the words above the text. Ss check in pairs then whole class feedback. 1 performed 2 pretended 3 fake 4 audience 5 stage 6 vanished

While reading (3-4 minutes) • Reading for gist

Before the students read the article in page 96, T gives clear instructions to make them read for gist in order to choose the best explanation for the phrase "the secret is really out of the bag".Time limit 2 minutes. Ss check in pairs. T checks with the class for feedback. a- someone has given a secret away.

While reading (10-12 minutes) • Reading for details

T elicits blocking vocabulary e.g. Code of secrecy: private agreement between people that they will not tell other people their secrets like the Mafia members. Traitor: a person you think is on your side but who is really working for your enemy. Apologetic: When you are sorry about something you said or did. Then the students will read the article again, this time for more details to answer the true/false questions. 6 minutes time limit. Ss check their answers in pairs. T writes the answers on the board for feedback. 1 T 2 T 3 F 4 F 5 T 6 T 7 F

While reading (4-5 minutes) • Contextual guessing

Ss read the text one more time to choose the best definition for each word in ex 3. ICQs: 1-How many words? 5 2-How many choices for each word? 2 either a or b 3-Are you working alone or in groups? Alone 4-How long? 3 minutes Ss check in pairs.Feedback by teacher while monitoring. 1b 2a 3b 4b 5a

Post reading (8-10 minutes) • Speaking using vocabulary in the context of magic secrets

Ss will sit in groups and nominate a secretary. Each group work together to come up with a story of magician who had performed a trick with an unexpected result, may be good or bad. The secretaries change places and share their group story with other groups. T monitors to collect errors. T corrects the errors on the WB after the Ss finish the activity.
