Main Aims

  • To enable students to identify and name common classroom objects in English using the structure "What's this? It's a ___."

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop listening and speaking skills in a fun, engaging manner.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Present new vocabulary words. Activity: Mystery Bag Place miniature models or illustrations of a poster, board, chair, and desk inside a non-transparent bag. Students will take turns guessing without looking and guessing which classroom object it is.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Prepare pictures on the powerpoint or flashcards of the new vocabulary words. Present the structure. Each slide asks, "What's this?" Students say their guesses/answers by using different feelings. Ex. Say "It's a book." with a sad/angry/happy/excited voice.

Highlighting and Clarification (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

“What's this? It's a (desk).” Repeat the structure with each object, encouraging students to mimic the pronunciation and sentence structure especially with the words "desk" and "chair".

Controlled Practice 1 (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Game: Grab the Ball Picture cards or flashcards are spread out on a desk with a ball placed in the center. Each team has two cups. When the teacher calls out a word, two students, one from each team, race to place their cups on the corresponding card. When teacher shouts "Ball!", both students rush to get the ball. The first to grab it scores a point for their team.

Controlled Practice 2 (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Game: Disney Fast Pass Each team starts with a ball or toy. When the music begins, the team passes the object around. When the music stops, the person holding the object chooses one of six sentences displayed on a screen. Each sentence corresponds to a different point value. The teacher reveals the point value, adding it to the team's score.

Wrap up (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Roll a soft ball to a student, asking, "What's this?" The student answers and rolls the ball to another peer.
