Description

(Period 2) This lesson focuses on introducing and practicing the vocabulary words "pencil," "pencil case," "ruler," and "rubber." Students will learn to ask and answer the question "What's this?" using these words.

Main Aims

  • Students will be able to ask and answer the question "What's this?" using the vocabulary words "pencil," "pencil case," "ruler," and "rubber."

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will develop confidence in speaking English and using basic classroom vocabulary in context.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Present new vocabulary words. Activity: Pass the Object Instructions: Prepare real items or large flashcards of the vocabulary words (pencil, pencil case, ruler, rubber). Play some music and pass one of the items around the teams. When the music stops, the student holding the item must say, "What's this?" The class responds together, "It's a (pencil)." Repeat with different items.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Activity: Show and Tell Introduce each vocabulary word using large, colorful flashcards or real items or powerpoint. Hold up each item or card and ask the class, "What's this?" Answer yourself first, "It's a (pencil)," and have the students repeat after you.

Controlled Practice 1 (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Activity: Classroom Chant The whole class will line up to form one long line. The teacher will show a picture. Once the picture is shown, the whole class will chant the sentence and clap their hands. This will be repeated for four different pictures.

Controlled Practice 2 (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Bad Luck Billy (Powerpoint Game) 3 to 6 students can play the game (1-2 students per team). The students stand up and one by one says the sentence on screen. If you are saying the sentence when Billy gets struck by lightning, you are out and the other teams gets a star/stars! Once he gets struck by lightning, go to the next slide for the next word!

Wrap up (2-3 minutes) • Quick Recap

Show each item one last time and ask, "What's this?" Let the students respond together.
