School Things Unit 1 Lesson 1
Year 1 level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
Students will be able to ask and answer the question "What's this?" using the vocabulary words "book," "crayon," "bag," and "pen."
Subsidiary Aims
-
Students will build confidence in speaking English and using basic vocabulary in context.
Procedure (26-35 minutes)
Activity: Mystery Bag Game Begin the lesson with a "Mystery Bag" game. Instructions: Prepare a bag filled with the vocabulary items (book, crayon, bag, pen). Invite a few students to take turns reaching into the bag without looking and pulling out an item. As each item is pulled out, ask the class, "What's this?" The student who pulled the item out should respond (or the teacher will help the student say), "It's a (book)." Show pictures using powerpoint and elicit the new words learned.
Activity: Show and Tell Introduce each vocabulary word using large, colorful flashcards or real items or powerpoint. Hold up each item or card and ask the class, "What's this?" Answer yourself first, "It's a (crayon)," and have the students repeat after you.
Activity: Hoops Race The teacher will place four flashcards on the desk at one end of the room. At the opposite end, there will be three hoops and three sticky balls. The teacher will call 3 students to play the game. The teacher will show a picture on the screen and everyone will say the sentence. Once the teacher says "Go!", students must quickly grab the hoop and put it over their body. After that, they grab the sticky ball and put it on the correct picture. The goal is to be the first to correctly put the sticky ball on the matching picture.
Activity: Arrange the sentence in order Each team will receive a basket containing words that, when arranged correctly, form a complete sentence. The teacher will display a picture on the PowerPoint screen, and the students' task is to work together to construct the corresponding sentence using the words provided in their basket. The first team to arrange the words correctly gets points.
Show each item one more time and ask, "What's this?" for a final round of practice.
