On My Way! Unit 2 Lesson 1
Year 3 level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification in the context of where people live. Students will learn and practice using vocabulary related to locations (farm, field, forest, lake, mountain, path, river, town, village, waterfall).
Subsidiary Aims
-
Students will practice speaking using the sentence structures: "I live in/on __." / "She lives in/on __." / "He lives in/on __."
Procedure (26-35 minutes)
Show pictures of different places (e.g., house, apartment, etc.) and ask students to raise their hands if they live in a similar place. Present new vocabulary words (places where people live). Transition by telling students, "Today, we're going to learn about different places where people can live, like farms, towns, and villages." Activity: Pass the Ball Have the students sit or stand in a circle. Begin by holding a ball or beanbag. Instructions: Pass the ball around the circle while playing a short song or counting to 10. When the song stops or the counting ends, the student holding the ball has to say their name and a place from the vocabulary list (ex. "My name is Maria, and I live in a village").
Activity: Guess the Place Show flashcards or pictures of the vocabulary words one by one. For each picture, ask the class, "What is this?" and encourage them to answer. After identifying the place, model the sentence structure by saying, "I live in a ____." (ex. "I live in a forest"). After each demonstration, have the whole class repeat the sentence after you. Then, pick a few students to create their own sentences using the correct place.
Activity: Rock, Paper, Scissors The teacher displays a picture on the PowerPoint. Instead of the usual rock, paper, scissors, players must quickly form a correct sentence using the picture and the provided sentence starters (I live in/on, She lives in/on, He lives in/on). The player with the most accurate sentence remains standing, while the others sit down. The winning player moves to the end of their team's line. The team with the most players standing at the end wins the round.
Activity: Dice Conversation Game Each team gets a dice and they take turns to roll a large dice with pictures or words of the vocabulary on each side. Instructions: After rolling, the student must make a sentence using the rolled word (ex. "He lives on a mountain"). Encourage the students to speak loudly and clearly.
