Description

In this lesson, students will discuss tips when traveling. They will also look at a Travel Blog, analyze the structure, and language to write their own. At the end of the lesson, students are expected to be able to write describe a place, mention some historical events and landmarks, and write about things they notice or were unexpected.

Main Aims

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context, activate some background knowledge, and engage students.

The class will begin discussing the following questions. Instructions: discuss with your classmate for three minutes. - When you travel, do you read or check a Travel Blog? - Do you think it can be helpful? The teacher mentions some cases and examples where reading a Travel Blog have been helpful to have prior ideas about a place or to save memories and tell personal experiences. Then , the teacher conducts OCFB by nominating individual learners to give answers.

Gist Reading (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students to engage with the model text.

The teacher introduces the aim of the lesson (writing a Travel Blog). Now, the students read a model for two minutes and answer some questions. Instructions: Read the Blog. Discuss with your classmate. You have two minutes. - Is it a helpful Travel Blog? - Is it the title engaging? - What title would you write? The teacher conducts OCBF by listening to the students' opinions.

Layout (2-3 minutes) • To analyze and identify elements of layout in the model text that provide coherence and cohesion for writing a Travel Blog

The teacher ask some questions. Instructions: Look at the text and answer: - How many paragraphs does it have? - What do they mention on paragraph one? Then, students will circle the information mention in the paragraph. Students will have two minutes. The teacher asks some ICQ´s: do you have to write or circle? (circle) how many minutes do you have? (2 minutes) The teacher will name each part of the paragraph: - Presenting the place - Historical events and landmarks - Unexpected situations

Useful Language (MFA) (8-10 minutes) • To identify and analyze language conventions in the model text that are helpful for writing a Travel Blog

MEANING: four minutes The teacher requests to classify some sentences taken from the text into simple present and simple past. Also, to classify some adjectives into positives and negatives. Finally, students will put on the box the verbs of perceptions. - Instructions: Classify the following sentences (simple present and simple past). Classify the following descriptive adjectives (positives and negatives). Put on the box the verbs of perceptions. You have three minutes. The teacher elicits answers by nominating individual learners. FORM: four minutes Now, the students will see the same sentences they had in the above exercise and they will have the parts of the speech. The teacher asks to organize the sentences according with the structure. - Instructions: Read the sentences. Organize the structure with the parts of speech. You have three minutes. Then, the teacher elicits answers by nominating individual learners. APPROPRIACY: two minutes Finally, the teacher asks students some CCQ´s: - Does the text have contractions? (yes) - Is it formal or informal writing? (informal) - Give some examples (a bit, but, it´s...)

Parallel Writing Practice (2-3 minutes) • To prepare for the main task by writing some essential aspects for the text

Now, the teacher encourages students to write words as information to develop the main task. Instructions: Complete the following information: - Place - Historical events/landmarks - Things you notice/unexpected situations That information will help students to have some ideas to write their Travel Blog.

Free Writing (14-15 minutes) • To develop the main task: writing the Travel Blog

Students will have their time to write a two-paragraph Travel Blog where they write a title, present the place, mention some historical events, describe some landmarks and tell some unexpected situations or things they noticed during their trip. They will post their writing on a Padlet. Also, the students are expected to use some sentences in simple present, simple past, descriptive adjectives and verbs of perceptions.

Feedback (4-5 minutes) • To provide peer feedback

To finish, the students will be provided a checklist for them to write their peer´s Travel Blog and check if they included the needed information. Then, the teacher will provide some general feedback on their writings.
