Description

In this lesson, the students learn to write an argumentative essay using appropriate phrases and expressions. The lesson starts with a lead-in discussion about the internet. This is followed by reading a text where students read for main idea and for gist. Finally, there is some useful language to help students to practice their writing.

Main Aims

  • SS will be able to write an argumentative essay using some useful language of phrases and expressions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • SS will also have practised reading for gist and detail by studying a model.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask SS to give their opinion on (Is the internet bad for young people?) Why? Why not? Students discuss in pairs.

Exposure (1-3 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

Ask students to read the text and identify whether it is a descriptive essay or an argumentative essay.

Useful Language (3-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming writing task.

Review the layout of the argumentative essay Ask SS to underline some expressions like the hook sentence, on the other hand and to sum up. Tell students imagine that someone prevents them from using the internet. Who is this person? Why did he_she say that? How can they convince him_her of the opposite opinion? Compare in pairs T can write some of the ideas on the board

Writing Task (4-6 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills (writing).

SS will now write an argumentative essay. Remind SS that others will read when they finish, so they must write.

Feedback and Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Collect their finished work Ask SS to read and vote on the best argumentative essay _ They can mark their favorite with the tick and most ticks wins! Write some examples of good and bad language on the board Elicit corrections to the mistakes.
