To provide gist listening practice using a text about workplace communications in the context of a conversation between colleagues.

To provide detailed listening practice using a text about office technology policies in the context of a conversation between colleagues.
Procedure (47-57 minutes)
- Greet Ss and ask them some questions about email, the internet, and technology at work. - Pass out worksheets with the questions for Ss to discuss with each other. - Clarify the meaning of "intranet."
- Instruct Ss to read, and pick the best title for the excerpt. - Converse in pairs. - WC FB. - Discuss possible solutions to the email problem.
- Put the Ss in groups. Give them cut up sections of the tape transcript and ask them to put them in order while listening to the recording. - Play the recording. - Give Ss the answer key to check their work. - Instruct the Ss to underline all the positive and negative expressions as they listen a second time. - Play the recording again. - In pairs, make a list of all the positive and negative expressions.
- Write "Positive" and "Negative" on opposite sides of the board, and instruct Ss to place cut-outs in the right position on the cline. - Pronunciation drilling. - Questions on worksheet to Ss.
- Arrange chairs in two groups. One group of Ss brainstorms arguments for why cell phones should not be banned, the other for why they should. - Students from opposite groups pair up and discuss. - Partners rotate periodically. - Monitor, correct, and make notes for WC FB.
- Write a list of error sentences on the board, in the middle of three columns. The left and right columns are for two teams of Ss. - Ss work in teams to fix the errors, then write the corrected sentence in their section of the board.
