Materials

Abc Online activities handout

Main Aims

  • To provide practice wth reading for main idea and detail regarding terminology pertaining to the Internet

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice using terminology pertaining to the Internet in business conversation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will pre-arrange the chairs so that the students are facing away from each other and from me. The lexis list will already be on their desks. I will introduce the topic of online life, in which we communicate without seeing the other person (usually). If there are any questions about lexis I will not give the answer but rather poll the crowd to answer. If there are any pronunciation errors I will drill the correct model. I will explain Ex.#1 and will give an example and instructions, then pass it out to Ss. Chorally they'll recite the questions one by one, and I'll call on them by name to answer each question until we get through them all.

Reading #1 (main idea) (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will ask Ss to return their chairs to a horseshoe and ask if they liked learning 'apart' from each other. Then show them Ex.#2 activity. I'll give one S the handout so they can read the title of the article to the class, then I'll ask the 2a questions and elicit replies, with them using target language. Next they'll read the article for the 'main idea' and turn to pairs for answering the 2b question. I'll monitor but not interfere unless they have a question.

Reading #2 (for detail) (13-13 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading

I will ask Ss to re-read the article for detail. Then they will need to stand and mingle in order to go round and ask and answer Ex.#3 questions to each other. I will work through the first question with them, then I will monitor and help as needed. When finished I will ask them to sit back down then I'll elicit a few responses regarding their discussions. If there is any error correction needed I'll elicit from WC.

Post-Reading (12-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I'll ask them to return to seats and I'll finish with Ex.#4, in Groups of 3 or more. Ss will read a question and another to answer. I'll monitor. We'll do some more review and error correction along the way, then I'll bring back to WC-T interaction and ask their opinions about online life. If the consensus is that online socializing is a weak alternative to live interpersonal relationships (I assume it will be the case) then we'll wrap up with an agreement to try and maintain real contact with our friends and family.
