Description

In this lesson, students will be able to learn some reading skills (Skimming and scanning) and they will respond to this reading text by a speaking follow up activity to practice fluency.

Abc Students book (p. 72), pictures

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to practice gist and scan reading using a text about Animated movies

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Discussion in the context of Adult humor animated movies

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To get the students' interest and prepare them for the topic.

*The T shows the Ss a picture about a family watching a movie or a T.V show and asks what this picture is about. Then T asks Ss: "Do you like watching movies" *Then T asks Ss in a quick brainstorming activity: "Can you give me some examples about movie genres" *Then, the T sets instructions for a pair work activity (p. 72, Ex. A): -Look at the picture and discuss with your partner what kind of movie or a TV show the family is watching and Why (The T says there is no right or wrong answers) - Try to come up with a common answer between you and your friend -You have 2 minutes *The T asks ICQs: -Will you work individually or with your partner? with my partner -How much time do you have? 2 minutes -Will you try to come up with a common answer? Yes *Meanwhile, T monitors *Then, the T listens to the answers of some students

Pre-Teaching Vocab (PTV) (4-6 minutes) • Top make the text accessible by clarifying some words that may block their understanding.

*After setting the context, the T tells the students that we will read a text about a certain type of movies but before we do so, we need to discuss some important words that we will find in the text. (Animation) -Context: Picture -Elicitation -Drilling: Ss listen first then repeat (Choral, group, individual) -Write the form (n.) and highlight the stressed syllable(the 3rd) (Humor) -Context: Definition [the quality of being amusing or comic, especially as expressed in literature] Elicitation -CCQs: When you watch humor, do you laugh or cry? Drilling: Ss listen first then repeat (Choral, group, individual) -Write the form (n.) and highlight the stressed syllable (the 1st)

Reading for gist (4-6 minutes) • To get the main idea of the text

*The T tells the Ss to read the text to answer (Ex. B) but the T gives them few seconds to read the question first *Then T sets instructions: -Alone, read the text to answer the question (choose the correct answer) -You need to read quickly just to understand the main idea to be able to answer the question, not the details -You have 2 minutes ICQ: -Will you do it alone or with your partner? alone -Do you need to understand each and every word or just the main idea? the main idea -How much time do you have? 2 minutes *Meanwhile, T monitors *Peer checking *Then, the T gets the answer from the students

Reading for details (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed reading task.

*The T says: "we will need to read it again to get some details, but fist gives the Ss a minute to read the question (Ex. C) *T sets instructions: -Alone, read the text again. -This time, you will need to read in detail to be able to answer the question. -You have 4 minutes ICQs: -Will you do it alone or with your partner? alone -Will you read quickly or in detail? in detail -How much time do you have: 4 minutes *Meanwhile, T monitors *Peer checking (2 minutes) *The T shows the answer key

Follow up activity (7-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text by practicing speaking for fluency

*T sets instructions: -With your partner, discuss this question: "Do you think it is a good idea for writers to use adult humor in animated movies? Why or why not) -Try to come up with a common answer. -You have 7 minutes *ICQ: - How much time do you have? 7 minutes -Will you try to come up with a common reason between you and your partner to support your opinion? yes *Ss speak *T monitors
