Description

In this lesson we will be practicing our receptive skill reading in the context of lies and lying. The sub aim of the lesson of the lesson is to practice our productive skill speaking.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of the receptive skill reading focusing on the sub skills of gist reading and reading for specific information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of lying

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will write 3 things about myself on the board. 2 will be true and one will be a lie. this will set our context for the class; lying. The students will have to guess which one is a lie by asking me questions. knowing all the while that i can also lie as i answer the questions.

Pre-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Elicit from the students different ways they can tell if someone is lying to the board. This gets the students thinking about the topic of the text and furthermore they are making predictions about the text which they will alter check.

While-Reading #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading tasks

Get the students to check their predictions by quickly reading through the passage, setting a time limit of only 2 mins to make sure they are only skim reading. Then discuss with their partner.

While-Reading #2 (9-11 minutes) • To provide students with the more challenging task of reading for specific information

Give students a HO of a series of true or false question which they will answer in pairs. First pre teaching 3 or 4 important pieces of vocabulary. give the students 4 minutes to do so and then give them an answer sheet to check.

Post-Reading - productive skills (12-14 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

First we will start with some controlled practice of matching phrases focusing on our theme of lying to make commonly used sentences. After going through the answers we will move on to freer practice discussing 3 different statements about lies.
