Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for making request in the context of special days

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a Conversation about making requests in the context of special days
  • To provide listening practice using a text about conversation audio in the context of special days

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will greet the students. I will ask how they feel and prepare them for the TL.

Engagement (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the TL to the Ss. To provide clarification of the rule.

I am going to give an example to the students. "Tomorrow is my mother's birthday. What shall I buy for her?" I can elicit the answers from the Ss and write some of them on the WB.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

I will show the picture of Tanya and Simon. Elicit where they are and what they are talking about! I will give them a gist listening and I will only ask them one question. "What do they decide to buy?" The students will be focusing on just that question. I will write the question on the board to take the students attention to that only. After the listening the students will check the answer together first and then I will take WC FB.

While Listening (5-8 minutes) • Detailed listening

I will tell students to listen the audio again and fill in the gaps. The students can listen this audio and check with the partners first, and second they will listen to the audio and check it again.

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To introduce and practice the grammar

I will ask them the Tanya's question to Simon. This is very important because our main grammar point will be the usage of "shall" in the context. "What question did Tanya ask Simon about Tom's birthday? to elicit; "What shall we get him?" CCQ; Is this question an advice? No Is it a suggestion? Yes I will give the meaning to the students and will be drilling this question form and pronunciation. I will practice making suggestions and responding suggections. To practice; Let's get him a CD player. I'm not sure. That's ok. That's a good idea. The students will complete the practice 10 with using 9b individually and practice questions, making suggestions, and responding to the suggestions with their partners. Students will use "shall" in the questions and for the answers students will use "Let's".

Controlled practice (5-7 minutes) • To practice the TL

The students will be working individually first to fill in the gaps and then they will check with the partner. The teacher will monitor them while they are doing the exercises. Then they will make a similar conversation with their partners. They are going to practice only the form of the conversation.

Freer activity (3-5 minutes) • To practice fluency

The students are going to draw some presents for their friends and they are going to give it the someone which will be in an other group. In here they will be practicing the birthday image. For example; A: Happy birthday ...... I have a present for you. (This is for you) B: Oh, thank you. It's great / wonderful / fantastic....
