Procedure (31-45 minutes)
T asks ss 'What promises do people in love often make? T elicits some ideas and writes them on the board. (e.g. I will always love you, I will never leave you, I will marry you, etc). Then, T asks ss 'Do people keep or break these promises?'
T asks ss to look at the cartoons. T asks 'What do you think the missing phrases are?' T gives a clue (These sentences start with I'll). Ss listen and complete. Then, T shows answer key.
T asks ss to look at the cartoons again. T asks them to number 1-3 in which one does somebody...? promise to do something decide to have something offer to do something T provides answer key.
T focuses on the MFP of the following sentences 1. I won't tell anyone. 2. I'll help you with that. 3. I'll take it back. 4. I'll pay you back. 5. I'll drive you home.
T sets up the activity. T tells ss they will work in pairs. T explains that will provide 6 different situations and they are involved in them. Ss need to read them and make a promise, an offer, or a decision in each. T tells ss they need to use the key words given for each situation. T does ICQs. T assigns ss to BoRs. (two if there are four students, and one single room if there are three students). Ss have 10 minutes. T monitors the BoRs. Situations: 1. You made a mistake at work. You feel ashamed. What will you say? (not/happen). 2. You bought a TV screen but it doesn't work. You have the receipt! What will you do? (take back) 3. You forgot your wallet at home. Your colleague will lend you money. What will you say? (pay back). 4. You are planning a party together. One of you wants to invite someone who drinks too much. What will you decide in the end? (not/invite). 5. One of your colleagues wants to tell you a secret about your boss. What will you say? (tell/not).
T sets up the activity. T asks ss to look at the sentences and discuss with a partner the questions. T does ICQs. T assigns ss to BoRs with different partners (in the case there are four students.). If not, ss will be assigned to one single BoR. Sentences: 1. I'll pay you back. 2. This won't hurt. 3. I'll come back and finish the job tomorrow. 4. I'll text you when I get there. 5. I'll do it later. 6. I won't tell anyone. 7. We'll build new schools and hospitals. Questions: 1. When do people say them? 2. What do you think they all have in common? 3. Why do people break promises? 4. Do you keep your promises?
T does content feedback. T shows a few sentences from the students' speech during FP and makes any necessary changes on them with the ss. T also highlights any good use of the language from the students. T provides a handout for extra practice. Ss are not required to do it.
