Abc HO - Pictures of adjectives

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of adjectives in the context of familiar objects and favorite places

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation using adjectives to describe familiar places and objects

Procedure

teaching vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • using 'by' and 'called' to talk about films, books, restaurant, and etc.

- The T shows a picture of 'Harry Potter' books. The T asks students what the name of this book is. - The T asks students: "Who wrote the books?" (J. K. Rowling). - The T writes on the WB: J. K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter. - Then the T writes: The book is _______ J. K. Rowling. The T elicits the word 'by'. - The T shows the picture of the film 'Titanic' and elicits the name of the film. The T then goes through the same process to teach 'The film is by James Cameron.' - The T shows a picture of a restaurant. The T asks 'What is this?' (a restaurant) - The T asks Ss the name of the restaurant (Pizza Hut). Then the T writes on the WB: It is a restaurant. It is _______ Pizza Hut. The T elicits the word 'called'. - The T goes through the same process for the coffee shop.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • to practice sentences including 'by' and 'called'

- The Ss will be given a HO including a table in which there are many options for the Ss to choose in order to make different sentences. The sentences in the table are broken down into parts, which mainly look like this: Last night / I saw / a film / called / Titanic. - After giving the instruction, T has Ss work individually to create as many sentences as they can in two minutes (this time limit can be extended if T finds out that Ss need more time to make a few more sentences). - Having finished the task, Ss will be asked to make pairs by standing in front of each other shaping the 'Tank Wheel'. - T will have Ss share their sentences with one another and swap places when the T asks them to do so. Doing so, Ss will read their sentences to their partners, who change places every 15 seconds or so (this will also give Ss a communicative purpose to share their ideas, however controlled it is).

Vocabulary - adjectives (12-14 minutes) • to teach some adjectives

- Ss will be put into pairs and given some pictures, each of which carries the meaning of one adjective (long, short, interesting, boring, cheap, expensive). - T has Ss come up with as many words assosiated with the pictures as they can in their pairs in a limited time. For example: river, hair, legs, snake, and etc. - After Ss have written down their words, T asks the WC to share their words. - Picture by picture, T tries to elicit the related adjective from the Ss. Having done so, T will practice the pronunciation by drilling. Then T will write the adjective together with the word's stress (by drawing a circle above the stressed vowel) on the WB, where Ss repeat after the T to practice the stress. - T, then, by guiding Ss, will elicit the form of 'adjective + noun'. The model sentences are taken from the pictures, e.g. a long river, short hair, a boring class, and etc.

semi-controlled practice (10-12 minutes) • speaking to improve accuracy

- Ss will be given a card each (Half of the cards include a noun and the other half include an adjective). - T has Ss walk around the class, choose someone who has the other half, and make a sentence using their cards. For instance, if someone has a card with a noun in it, he/she should find someone who has a card with an adjective in it. Sentences made in this way may include: "I read an interesting book yesterday." Or "I saw a long man in the street last night."

lead-in/warmer (2-3 minutes) • to set the context and engage Ss

- T writes some words on the WB. - T has Ss look at the words and guess what they are (they are names of films, restaurants, and books) - Having elicited the answers, T tells Ss that they are going to talk about films, restaurants, and books.
