To provide specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about the quota system in the context of women in politics
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
*Write down a quote on the board and ask the students to discuss in a group. Get geedback. * Ask the Ss to brainstorm and make a list about 'women in politics' in a small group and ask the Ss to record their words onto the board. * Add some more vocab. such as positivite discrimination, quota system to their list and elicit the meaning.
* Provide each student a handout. Ask the Ss to listen to the indroduction of a radio programme and circle the correct answer. Take general feedback. * Ask the Ss listen to the second part of the programme and discuss which speaker is against/for the quota system. Discuss in pairs/in small groups. Take general feedback.
* Get the Ss to scan the tapescript and to underline wish clause sentences. Record the sentences onto the board. Elicit the meaning by asking CCQ. Elicit the formula on the board. Highlight that 'wish' is slightly different than 'if only'
* Ask the Ss to choose the best verb form in ex 1, then check with their partners. Take w/c FB. * Get the Ss to rewrite the sentences in ex 2. Ss work in pairs. Take general feedback. * Ask the Ss to look at the photos on page 140 and write two sentences for each picture beginning I wish or if only. Ss work in pairs. Monitor the Ss for delayed error correction. Get FB and correct the mistakes.
* If time, get the Ss to think about their regret about the present or past. Ss stand in a circle. A student throws the ball at another student. The S who catches the ball shares their regret by using wish or if only.
